- 500g (1.1 lb) stewing beef (or casserole beef)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
- 1 cloves garlic minced
- 6 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
- 4 tbsp oyster sauce
- 4 tbsp honey (or a low-carb sweetener for a keto version)
- 2 tsp Chinese five spice
- 1/2 tsp dried chili flakes (optional)
- 1 head broccoli cut into bite-sized florets
- 3 tbsp cornflour (corn starch in the US) for thickening the sauce
Prepare the Slow Cooker: Add the stewing beef, onion, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, oyster sauce, honey, Chinese five spice, and chili flakes (if using) into the slow cooker. Stir everything together to coat the beef evenly.
Cook the Beef: Set the slow cooker to HIGH for 4-5 hours or LOW for 6-7 hours, allowing the beef to cook until it’s tender.
Thicken the Sauce: 30 minutes before the cooking time ends, create a cornflour slurry by mixing the cornflour with a small amount of water. Add this paste into the slow cooker to thicken the sauce.
Add the Broccoli: Add the broccoli to the slow cooker and cook for an additional 30 minutes. Alternatively, steam or boil the broccoli separately and add it just before serving.
Serve: Once the sauce is thickened and the broccoli is tender, serve the Slow Cooker Beef and Broccoli with rice, noodles, or a keto-friendly side like cauliflower rice.
-
Vegetables: You can add additional vegetables like bell peppers, mushrooms, or carrots for extra flavor and nutrients.
-
Marinate the Beef: For extra flavor, you can marinate the beef in the sauce overnight before slow cooking.
-
Gluten-Free: Use tamari or a gluten-free soy sauce to make this dish gluten-free.
-
Keto Version: Swap honey for a keto-friendly sweetener like stevia or erythritol.
